Topic 39: Do you agree or disagree that progress is always good? Use specific reasons and examples to support your essay.

--------------------------------

People waste a lot of time rambling about whether progress is always good or not. From my point of view, it is impossible to figure out the truth. In fact, the use of progress depends on what hand it is put on.

On the one hand, it is undeniable that progress has been inherent with the human beings. Without progress, there would be no change in our economy, our standard of living, and our health. There is no doubt that medical advances supported human beings to fight deadly diseases like smallpox. Thanks to these achievements, our lives are longer and healthier. Moreover, advances in communications technologies, such as Internet, and cell phone, have tied this whole world into the global village.

On the other hand, if progress is in the wrong hand, we can hardly imagine what damage it will bring about to the world. For example, about one hundred years ago, dynamite, patented by the Swedish physicist Alfred Nobel, was the biggest key element to produce explosive used in coal mining. But, when the World War I broke out, both warring parties used dynamite to make mines. And, many people were killed by them. Alfred Nobel, suddenly, came to realize with horror and sorrow that his patent, in a way, turned out to be an effective means of killing. In an action to ensure his patent coming from his positive mind, Alfred Nobel set up the Nobel Prize to be awarded to those with contributions to the betterment of the human society.

For all reasons stated above, progress is only progress in its own sense. And, I think that progress is only good when it is in the right use, for the betterment and flourishment of the individual and the community.
