You may have experimented during work time that you couldn't get closer with all of your co-workers, but you probably have tried to do this in search of a good work atmosphere.
I used to have many co-workers when I was working at Shell Company in the Sales Office. With one of them, Juan Perez, I couldn't be kind because I felt some kind of skin rejection for him. One day my boss told to me, "From now on, you are going to do your daily work with Juan Perez." Had you ever heard this kind of order from your boss in your life?. Imagine this situation; I felt that my boss was sending me to the front line, he was sending me to work with "the enemy". With many years of experience it seems that it would be a great choice, for a good work environment, to look forward for some important characteristics that your co-workers should have, like a good ethical sense, a correct sense of responsibility, friendly manners and surely a good sense of humor.

First of all a good ethical sense is the most important characteristic that a co-worker should have. When you work with a co-worker that lacks of a good ethical sense he would probably make you a bad trick as delay the work that you need from him, sabotage your ideas, or just making bad comments about you to your boss.

A second important characteristic that should have a co-worker is his appropriate sense of responsibility. Once I suffered this situation when I order an important work to a subordinate. He passed all day doing other things and he never finished with the task, and as I was the responsible of this work I had to finish it.

When you work in a company you depend on the work of others, so, to obtain the best of them you have to have friendly manners when you ask someone for something you need in search of your success; and this is the third important characteristic that co-workers must have. As an example of this once a co-worker asked me for some spreadsheets that he needs in an ugly manner. I gave the spreadsheets to him quickly because our boss need it but our relation never be the same.

The fourth but not less important characteristic that a co-worker should have is a good sense of humor. You spend 50 % of your day working; imagine how it could be to work with people that hate to laugh or don’t accept innocent jokes; if it is your case, probably you are now looking for another job.

As my advice always try to develop and fathom those important characteristics between you and your co-workers. If you try, you will probably never feel that you are working with "the enemy".

: Marcello,

: Your essays are very interesting, but once you write them, you need to reread and revise them before you post them.

: Your organization is good, but you have several awkward constructions that I know you can fix yourself.

: Try and I'll read your revision.

: Thanks for your help.
