Whether high school students are allowed to study what they want to do or not can be a controversial issue. Some people insist that high school students are old enough to decide what to study. In my opinion, however, students should study some courses other than what they would like to pursue.
If students are allowed to study freely, some will not take courses at which they are not good. As we can remember about ourselves when we were high school students, there must have been some classes we did not want to attend. The reason of which was mostly that we did not understand what the teachers were talking. However, some courses are essential in order to lead a decent life after graduation. At least in order to pass a test, we did study hard and some knowledge we acquired then must be helpful still now. If we had been allowed to study only what we wanted to, we might have avoided some important courses which we can not take a chance to study again.
Further, even if students are allowed to study what they want, some may become at a loss. I can see that some good students have specific goals and they know what to do in order to achieve the goals. Generally speaking, however, high school students do not recognize what they want to learn. They are not necessarily passive. They do not foresee what will be indispensable in future. That is why, in my view, it is schoolsf responsibility to select courses for the students to learn.
In conclusion, high schools should have their students study some essential subjects. If not, students might regret afterwards, that is when they become adults. Can you maintain with confidence that you could choose proper courses if you had been free to decide your courses?
