Some people thinks business should hire employees for their entire lives to avoid feeling and financial hurt to empolyees caused by fairing . But I think wheather or not a business hires employees depends on market environment not emotion. They do not need to hire employees for their entire lives, for three reasons.
First, if it is unable to fire employees, the business has to burden high expense to keep its employees, and then it cannot change this expense freely to fit quick variety in market. For instance, in economy depressions many companies need less employees. Thus, this policy will make our companies in passive position in international market. Becouse while they are running high costs, their international competitors can cut their cost by fairing employees temporarily and get lower price of products.
Second, prevecting business from firing old empolyees also prevents it providing opportunities to newcomers. Because they cannot fire unfit employees, within a definite amount of cost, companies cannot hire extra persons and may give up many professional and fit young persons. It will be sad if in our society people lose their job opportunities not because of their weak abilities or failure in competition but just because of their age and a kind of protectionism.
In fact, this policy even harm the employees of business too, who the supporters of this "no firing policy" initially want to protect. Because without worring about being fired or compitition, employees are less active to improve their abilities and become more dependent on their companies. It is dangous for them. For example, if their companies are bankrupt, they will have more difficulty to find and adjust to new jobs.
After all, the most important thing to employees is a fair competition invironment. A sense of crisis being fired can promote them improve with their companies and society; it is better than refusing change and keeping secure but lazy on jobs.
