Many animal species thrive in Vietnam’s warm, rainy climate. But among these abundant animals, I would choose the water buffalo the most important. A water buffalo contributes to the development of our agriculture and is a symbol of Vietnamese villages.
As an agriculture country, Vietnam depends on cultivation of farming plants such as rice, corn, or potato. Farmers use buffalo to plow their fields. The buffalo is even considered a hard-working farmer as well. They strain at the plow powerful. They work heavily but quietly. With the water buffaloes’ help, many generations of Vietnamese farmers have fed themselves. It is not an exaggeration when Vietnamese farmers praise their buffaloes as “the first thing of their career”.
Because of its important role in agriculture, the buffalo is a symbol of Vietnamese villages too. As you pass mile after mile of rice paddies, you can see the buffaloes eating grass or plowing fields here and there. Children sometimes ride on their backs. Although they are such big animals, the buffaloes give us a feeling of tranquility. They often appear on pictures of the countryside with the bamboo trees and the green fields – indispensable things of the villages.
Next year, my country will hold the Seagames (a sports festival of Southeast Asian nations which happens every other year). The buffalo has been chosen to be the animal of this significant festival, stands out above other important animals in the country. It could not be a hazardous choice, couldn’t it?
