Many plant species thrive in the Vietnam’s warm, rainy climate. But among these abundant plants, I would choose rice the most important. Rice is the main food in our country, contributes a great deal to the country’s economic and helps promote other industries.
Traveling cross-country, you will pass mile after mile of paddies, like a quilt of green patches spread to the horizon. For over four thousand years, we feed ourselves mostly from these fields. A normal meal in a Vietnamese family always contains rice. In addition to rice, we also have different kinds of meats and vegetables varying each meal. The poor may not afford expensive foods and the rich may have luxurious diet but all of us need rice.
Beyond feeding ourselves, we manage to grow enough rice to be the world’s second-largest rice exporter, after Thailand. Exporting rice is an important part in the country’s revenue. Having more money in turn will help develop other industries. To an agriculture country with fertile land, it is the most suitable and efficient way to become wealthy.
In order to produce more and more rice for food and export, we need new good breeds and new farming machines. This demand calls for the development of biotechnology and mechanical industry. As a result, the whole country benefits from producing rice.
With all the reasons above, I definitely believe that no other plant can replace rice in the country people’s life and in its economic.
