I am a Vietnamese student. I have lived in a poor country and I have never been to abroad so far but I like learning about the countries all over the world. I think that one of the most effective ways to learn about a country is to read its novels.
Novels bring knowledge about the country. First, from novels ,we know the history of the country. For example, after reading “Gone with the wind”, I know the civil war of the U.S, the war was to liberate slaves. I was also told about the US society this period, a society of racial discrimination. In addition to the things, reading novels tell me about the culture such as American culture, exactly a multi culture that is combined the cultures of many nations and races.
Besides that the most important thing is brought by novels is people.People in novels are the ones who come from the practice, and they were redescribed by writers. From their description, I know that American people are normally warmer than English, the oriental persons are more reserved..People in Japan are very serious.By reading novels, I also know that in the world war II, Hitler stimulated many German youth and forced them to fight.
I personally suppose that reading novels is very important way to learn about the country in which they were written. In my opinion reading novels has two purposes: to be relax and to have knowledge. I think I can combine both .
