“There is evidence that consumers are becoming more and more interested in
growing their own vegetables. A national survey conducted last month indicated that many consumers were dissatisfied with the quality of fresh vegetables available in supermarkets. And locally, the gardening magazine Great Gardens has sold out at the Village News stand three months in a row. Thus, we at Green Thumb Gardening Center can increase our profits by greatly expanding the variety of vegetable seeds we stock for gardeners this coming spring.”
The argument above is well-presented, but not thoroughly well-reasoned. According to the conclusion of a national survey conducted last month and the sale of a local gardening magazine for the latest three months, the argument for expanding the variety of vegetable seeds stocked for gardeners the coming spring seems logical, for people become more interested in growing their own vegetables.
However, the owner of Green Thrum Gardening is failing to consider the problem across-the-board, for the increasing interest in growing one’s own vegetables is only one possible conclusion in terms of the two ensamples provided above. Even if people were dissatisfied with the quality of fresh vegetables available in surpermarkets, many of them may prefer to buy less vegetables and more other food rather than becoming gardeners because after all few people have so much time which can be expended in growing vegetables. Although the sale of the local gardening magazine is quite good, it can not necessarily proved that the number of people who would like to grow vegetables themselves is increasing. At the very outside, it revealed people become more interested in some horticultural knowledge. And the increase of the sale may even only because the price of the magazine has been cut down. It appears reasonable , therefore, for the owner not to be too optimistical and be more prudent.
A national survey can not reveal the local situation precisely. We can not say that local residents do not satisfied with the vegetables provided by the serpermarkets in terms of a national survey because the conclusion may be educed according to the situation of many regions happened except this area. Again, the survey was conducted last month and the conclusion only reflect the tone of the several prevenient months and can not forecast the coming tone. In addition, three months is not a long enough period for the owner to determine to expand management in terms of the sale of a magazine during such a short period.
Oveall, the the reasoning behind expanding the variety of vegetable seeds seems logical as presented abovesince the owner is acting in his own best interests. However, before any final decisions are made about the expansion , the owner of Green Thrum Gardening should evaluate all possible alternatives according to the two examples.
