The social value towards the important qualities of a good son or daughter is probably different among different societies. For Thai culture, there are some important qualities that a good son or daughter is expected to have.
To begin with, a good son or daughter --if he/she is a child—should pay his/her attention on his/her education. Most parents anticipate to see their children graduated so that they can be confident that their children will be able to earn their living when they become mature. Furthermore, since parents have to work very hard in order to earn enough money to pay for their children’s tuition fees, any children who don’t try to do best in their study but take their interest in bad things such as drug or sex instead are usually considered as an extremely bad son or daughter.
The second important quality is that he/she should obey his/her parent. Although each person has his/her own thought, listen to his/her parent’s advice still better than doesn’t. Parents are not merely two people in the world who truthfully love their children most but they have a lot of experiences as well. Therefore, they are the best counselors for their children.
Lastly, to be a good son or daughter, he/she should take care of his/her parent when they become old and weak. As parent can raise their children with difficulty for a long time –since they were newborn babies until they grow up and become adults, a good son or daughter is expected to nurse his/her parent when they are too old to take care of themselves.
In conclusion, although the time has passed for over centuries, this Thai major attitude towards a good son or daughter still exists and has not been changed for long.
