it is a GRE issue:

Competition and cooperation are of the most important factors in the modernized society. Cooperation integrates the wisdom of several people so that the project may be completed faster and better. Competition, in another word, emphasize the advantage of every people in the group with the same intention. Though baleful competition exists, competition is definitely more beneficial than detrimental to society.

Competition makes people more active. Without competition, a lot of people will consider themselves the best in their majors. Though such feeling of confidence is important, it inevitably limits their intentions to develop the knowledge and technique. The appearance of another specialist will challenge the importance of the colleague in the same group and encourage him to learn more and do more. A good example is in the IT program. In a work team, if there is only one person which is good at programming, he may think himself the best, and seldom considers improving his programs. Now a new programmer which is smart and hard working comes into the same group, always uses fewer languages to complete a procedure. The former programmer must face the fact that he is not the best there, needs to learn more and work more to keep up with the later programmer, while the latter one must study too so that he may be always better than the first programmer.

Besides, competition is beneficial to the global improvement. With the development of communication and transportation, merchandize can be easily transported from one country to another country, as well as new technique can be easily learned from one region to another region. International competitions in a lot of fields appear. With a lot of brands of the same kind of commodity, customers always prefer the brand with better quality and cheap price. Therefore international competition make the manufactures develop this kind of merchandize with the good quality and appropriate price using the better technique. For instance, medicine is very important in daily life. At first there is only one medicine which can cure TB, a lung disease, with the severe adverse reactions. Then to occupy the better market, a new medicine for this disease appears which is cheap with little adverse reaction. People who suffer from this kind of disease will definitely choose the later medicine for both the treatment and the quality of life.

Admittedly, it should be confessed that there are inevitably some negative effects that competition brings to us. Price competition sometimes make a factory bankruptcy. To make their products more profitable, some industries do what they can to decrease the cost of the product ignoring the health to the customers, the pollutions to the circumstance, and so on. However, such negative effects shouldn¡¯t be too exaggerated to overshadow the important role that competition plays in our society. More important, People are now wary of such competitions and there are some rules to prohibit the baneful competition.

In sum, despite some negative effects, competition is still beneficial rather than detrimental to us.
