GRE AW Issue No1: ˇ°We can usually learn much more from people whose views we share than from people whose views contradict our own; disagreement can cause stress and inhibit learning." posted by Ardone Wang on July 15, 19102 at 03:50:57:
it is fantastic
: The issue argues that we can usually learn much more from people whose views we share than from people whose views contradict our own and that disagreement can cause stress and inhibit learning. In my point of view,I disagree with the speaker for some obvious reasons.
: Firstly, those who share the same views with us can only give us the sense of self-identity but may never give us the opportunity to correct our flaws or faults in our views. For instance,in the field of science and technology, all the great inventions and discoveries came out of disagreement and discussion. If all the people had the belief that the earth is flat, all they could learn from those whose views they shared was nothing but wrong and never could they know that the earth is not flat but round.Without the basic knowledge of the earth, there can never be so much progress in the fields of aeronautics and spaceflight, and our dream of conquering the whole universe is beyond imagination.
: Secondly, disagreement and argumentation can cause stress but can not inhibit the step of learning,on the contrary, they can improve the ability of study and widen our fields of vision. This is especially true in the field of education. In order to cultivate their ability of study,we should teach our children how to discuss with people holding different views and to learn from different ideas, through which they can learn how to cooperate with and learn from others. The more they participate in the disagreements, the wider their fields of vision will be and the more knowledge they can get.
: Last but not least, the advancement of our society requires that we learn from different and even contradictive views. If there had been no disagreements,we may have no variety of the colorful world; if there had been no disagreements, our minds will be strictly restricted by doctrines and we will lose all the sense of innovation.Just imagine what it will be like if we lost variety of the world and the sense of innovation!
: In conclusion, It is not disagreement and discussion but the aimless recognition of views shared with others that put sand in the wheel of social progress. But as everything has two sides,on the one hand,we should discuss with those whose views contradict us to find truth; and on the other hand, we should consider the ones who have the same views with us to strengthen our own ideas.
