Topic 40: Learning about the past has no value for those us living in the present. Do you agree or disagree? Use specific reasons and details example to support your essay.
--------------------
People waste a lot of time rambling whether the past should be ignored or not. In my own view, it is impossible to figure out the truth. In fact, the question should be considered in several aspects.
On the one hand, I wholeheartedly agree that learning from the past is valuable for those of us living in the present. All of knowledge we have today is a result of all the work of our predecessor. For example, the ancient Greek developed geometry, which helped other European scientists analyze the solar system, which in turn gave us a new understanding of our place in the universe. Moreover, we will have to learn a vast majority of knowledge if each of us has to discover by ourselves that 2+2=4. So, to ignore the knowledge of the past would mean to throw away five thousand years of history and experience.
On the other hand, it is undeniable that in some cases we have to overcome constraints of the past. For instance, at one time, leading thinkers of Europe ever believed that the Earth was at the center of the universe; and those who disagreed were convicted as heretics. After a lot of severe struggles, however, scientists were eventually able to break away from the past and accepted the new model of the universe. Is it right to say “No.” to the past?
For all reasons stated above, analyzing and learning about the past have enormous value for us. In some case, however, it is important to ignore the past so that we are able to make steps forward.
