Should a city try to preserve its old, historic buildings or destroy them and replace them with modern buildings.Nowhere in the world has this issue been so much debated like in our society, for our country ,China, has a history of more than 5000 years, leaving diverse historic buildings, but on the other hand ,it is still a developing country which needs new buildings for its further development. As far as I am concerned ,I would vote for the former choice without hesitance, considering old buildings¡¯ tremendous academic, economic and social value, and I will illustrate them as follows:

The main reason for my propensity is that the historic buildings are the wealth of a city, and if they are destroied, they cannot be rebuilt any more. That will be absolutely a large loss of the city.A city without history(considering historic buildings as the best symbol of history) is like a man without soul who cannot live a better life. Those bulidings are of great value in many aspects. From them we can learn the history, the culture and the art which our ancestors left to us . They are unique. They are as precious as diamonds. How can we destroy them!

Although the above reason may be the most important determinant,it is not the only explanantion of my inclination. Those who want to building new buildings argue that only new ones such as factories and shopping malls can benefit the economy. Actually ,the old ones can bring a city much more money. For example,in my country, every year millions of foreigners pour in it just to visit the old and historic buildings .That is the main motivation driving them here.Just imagine what would be like if all the old buildings are destroied, will they come here to visit the new factories or shopping malls. No ,definitely no.There are millions of them in their countries.

The last factor that deserved some words here is that the historic buildings are the best place to foster the young people ¡®s love towards their country. Those buildings are baring a part of the history, glory or shame. It is the concrete things (but not only books )that will let the children have a more profound impression and learn better.

Admittedly,I cannot deny that new buildings have their own merits. They should be built, but should not be built where historic buildings once stood. On account of what I have discussed above,we can safely come to the conclusion that we should preserve a city¡¯s old, historic buildings.
