Some people believe that university students should be required to attend classes. Others believe that going to classes should be optional for students. Which point of view do you agree with?

I believe that university students should not be forced to attend classes. It is their choice to continue their studies in a university and they should be able to choose how to study. What is more, with the rapid development of science and technologies traditional universities may gradually disappear and there could be no more classes but virtual lectures on the computer.
Nevertheless, I think it may be good for freshmen to have a minimum number of classes to attend. As they are first year students they may not be aware of the benefits of going to classes. By simply trying to rebel or follow in the steps of second year students, they may miss the good sides of attending classes, such as learning a larger part of the material at class, or knowing what your professor wants you to turn your attention to.
However, where sophomore, junior and senior students are concerned, I support the idea attending classes to be optional. I believe these students are experienced enough to know the advantages of going to lectures and to choose for themselves whether they really need them. If attending classes is mandatory, it may cause inconvenience to some students as they may not be always able to attend them. While if it is optional, those students who want to go to classes, can still do it.
Finally, it may soon become obsolete going to classes to listen to your professor’s lecture. Even now exist on-line universities which educate their students through the Internet. I think this practice will further develop and students will no longer need to attend classes at their universities. And why should they if they can just as well see and listen to their professor on their personal computer in the comfort of their home?
Things no more stay the same for two generations in a roll. The development of new computer technologies can drastically change the traditional way of learning. That is why I don’t think universities should demand from their students strict adherence to practices that may soon be out of date. Such traditional institutions should have to learn to become more liberal with their students and give them the freedom of choice.
