In the twentieth century, man made a machine, a machine which would forever change the lifestyle of man. This machine in reference is the television. Television viewing, now has a plethora of controversies over it. I am, of the view that television viewing has its own advantages such as a good mode of learning, a family entertainment and a pastime, as well as its own disadvantages such as eye problems, inefficiency in studies and inclination to criminal behavior.
Television has made life easier for children in many ways. It is a good mode of learning with its real life, motion pictures and colorful display which tends to be retained in memory quite easily. It is also a good source of family entertainment for children watching television. It also helps to make children aware of the happenings not only in their vicinity or state but in any part on the globe. Good programs also broadens their outlook on the society, removes any prejudice and inculcates moral values in children. Besides television viewing is also favorite pass time for many.
Watching television can be bad for children. The --- “Anything in excess is bad” is relevant here. Spending incessant hours in front of the boob tube can make children addicted to it which could prove detrimental to their mental and physical well being, such as various eye problems. Watching excess television could also affect their studies causing their efficiency levels drop. Studies show that children watching violent programs, which includes corporal chastisement, murder etc tends to have an inclination to criminal behaviors. Watching such programs could affect the child’s ability to differentiate between reel life and real life.
I believe that television viewing if directed in the right direction has a vast potential to expand the minds of children and if directed in the wrong way can have equally dire consequences. After all when Prometheus gave fire to humanity, he also launched the career of many an arsonist.
